Meta announced major enhancements to the Threads API on July 25, 2025, introducing a comprehensive suite of developer tools that significantly expand the platform’s capabilities beyond basic posting functionality. The updates address growing demand from businesses and content creators seeking deeper integration with Meta’s text-based social platform.
The announcement builds upon Meta’s initial Threads API launch on June 18, 2024, when the company first opened the platform to all developers during the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. That initial release provided basic functionality including post publishing, content retrieval, and reply management capabilities for creators and businesses managing their presence at scale.
According to Meta’s documentation, the new features center around enhanced content creation, improved analytics access, and streamlined developer workflows. The platform now supports polls when publishing new threads, allowing developers to create interactive content and retrieve poll results from existing posts. This functionality addresses a key gap in engagement tools that social media managers have requested since the API’s original launch.
Location integration represents another significant addition. Developers can now search for and add location tags to Threads posts through API calls, enabling location-based content strategies and geographic targeting capabilities. The feature mirrors functionality available on other Meta platforms while maintaining Threads’ focus on text-based conversations.

The technical implementation includes a simplified publishing process through the auto_publish_text parameter, allowing developers to create text-only threads with a single API call rather than the multi-step process previously required. This streamlines workflows for automated content publishing systems and social media management tools.
Real-time notification capabilities have been expanded through webhook integration. Developers can now receive instant notifications when users mention their accounts in posts, enabling responsive engagement strategies and improved customer service capabilities. The webhook system builds upon earlier real-time features introduced in Meta’s October 2024 API updates.
Public profile access has been significantly enhanced, allowing developers to retrieve public profiles and fetch posts created by public accounts. This functionality enables content discovery applications and competitive analysis tools while maintaining privacy protections for private accounts. The system implements specific rate limiting to ensure platform stability.
